Auctions announces first antiques sale

IOLA, Wis. – Swift on the heels of its successful sports and entertainment sale, Auctions has announced its first foray into the world of antiques and collectibles.

The second sale of the newly formed auction house, owned by Krause Publications (publishers of Antique Trader magazine) will launch Oct. 19 and close Nov. 5 with a consignment deadline of Sept. 15.

The sale will accept a variety of antiques and collectibles, however special attention will be paid to jewelry, antique toys and advertising. It will be held at and a printed catalog will be produced.

“For more than 50 years, Antique Trader’s mission has been to bring together buyers and sellers of antiques and collectibles,” said Dianne Wheeler, Antiques and Collectibles Community Leader for Krause Publications, owned by F+W Media. “The magazine and Web site were founded on that idea. Evolving into the online auction business to provide our readers another way to sell their high-quality collections is a natural fit.”

Consigners to’s initial sports and entertainment sale, which closed June 18, trusted the fledgling auction to sell their rarities, such as a sole surviving set of National Copper Plate Co. portraits produced in 1898-99. The plates, depicting the era’s most popular baseball players, opened with a $25,000 bid and slid into home with a $52,650 closing, a record price for the set.

It was more than sports collectors who shopped the auction for rare finds. A rare complete set of 98 autographs from the Rittenhouse Twilight Zone trading card line brought $11,700 on an opening bid of $4,000. All prices include a 17 percent buyer’s premium.

“We were very happy with the quality of consignments we secured for our debut auction,” said Steve Bloedow, director of Auctions.

“We reach more than 100,000 collectors through our publications, Web sites and e-mail newsletters and we continue to reach new buyers every day.” Auctions’ Antiques & Collectibles Auction opens Oct. 19 with a consignment deadline of Sept. 15.
