CENTERPORT, N.Y. – J. Lance Mallamo, executive director of the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, has left that post to run the museum system in Alexandria, Va.
Mallamo took over as director of the Office of Historic Alexandria on Aug. 6. He will be responsible for the management and oversight of eight museums and historic sites with an annual budget of $3 million, and help develop preservation policies for the city.
At the Vanderbilt, Mallamo, 55, and the museum board developed a capital program to rebuild the Centerport estate’s infrastructure. The museum opened the seaplane hangar as a temporary exhibit space and began new tours, such as one of the servants’ wing at William K. Vanderbilt II’s Spanish Revival mansion, called Eagle’s Nest, built between 1910 and 1936.
Before his duties at the museum, Mallamo was Suffolk County’s director of historic sites.
