Rare cards offered in Mastro’s December Premier Auction

BURR RIDGE, Ill. – Mastro’s December Premier Auction will offer more than 1,500 items, including a collection of rare and un-cataloged cards from a private collection.

The so-called “Skydash Collection” features cards primarily from the 1910 era. The centerpiece of the collection is more than 200 E270 Colgan’s Chips Tintops. Two of the Colgan’s cards picture Joe Jackson and Jim Thorpe.

thorpe-front.jpgThe Tintops were manufactured to sit inside small round tins of Colgan’s Chips mints. The thin “chips” or baseball cards were collected in quantities of 25 and mailed in to redeem a photo of the “world’s pennant winning team.” Because the “chips” were collected and sent in for a premium, very few remained in collectors’ hands.

Most of the player images on the E270 Tintops are also seen on the E254 Diamond Star series of the same era. Jackson and Thorpe do not appear in the Diamond Star series.

thorpe-back.jpgThe initial offering of the E270s will consist of 145 different high-graded cards, including nine previously un-cataloged cards and the Thorpe card, which will be offered individually with a minimum bid of $10,000. The other 144 cards will either be offered individually or in groupings for various minimums bids. The Jackson card and the balance of the duplicate E270s will be sold in Mastro’s April 2008 Premier sale.

Bidding in Mastro’s current phone/Internet Premier Auction began on Nov. 26 and concludes on Dec. 13. For more information, call 630-472-1200 or go to www.mastroauctions.com.

Mastro’s Live Auction division will hold its inaugural “Connoisseur Auction” on Dec. 15 at the company’s corporate headquarters, 7900 S. Madison, in Burr Ridge, incorporating eBay Live. The sale will be composed primarily of fine art and Americana items.
