Reinvention a key to antiques business survival

Leave it to Wayne Jordan to cover thousands of dealers and find the one who is reinventing her business with her customer in mind. Jordan’s coverage of the great Hillsville, Va., antique flea and gun show has a nice interview with K.C. and Cheryl Jones, owners of Cabin in the Woods Early Primitives.

at1103-hillsville-P1010025.jpgAs customers move in and out of her booth all day, Jones talks about what she’s doing to win the hearts and minds of customers who want to learn how antiques bring tranquility to your everyday life. She’s taking a cue from other great marketers such as Apple or WalMart to sell how the item makes you feel rather than the object itself.

Favorite Finds Contest

The response from this year’s Favorite Finds Contest was immense. The stories have all the intrigue of a ’30s dime store pulp and a nice dose of humor for good measure. There’s even a follow up from one of last year’s great stories.

Due to the huge response, we struggled in figuring out how best to present them in a timely manner and in a way that didn’t jilt our regular advertisers, columnists and writers. The solution? Let’s compile them into their own special issue of Antique Trader and send it to all of our subscribers – for FREE! So that’s what we’re doing.

In an issue cover dated Nov. 10, all of your Favorite Finds Contest submissions will be published in a special bonus issue to your subscription.

Consider it our gift to you for sharing your great stories.

Israeli Declaration SOLD!

My friend Noah Fleisher, my predecessor here at Antique Trader and now Director of Public Relations for Heritage Auction Galleries, said an Antique Trader subscriber recently purchased an early copy of the Israeli Declaration of Independence. The important document was on display at Heritage’s new Beverly Hills location and was featured on the pages of Antique Trader (June 23, 2010 cover date).

Measuring 12 3/4 inches by 38 inches, the early copy was inscribed by Israel’s first leader and hero David Ben-Gurion to Baruch Zuckerman, an important player in Jewish affairs in the years leading up to the 1948 Independence. The price was not disclosed. [Click here to read the original announcement about the Israeli Declaration of Independence.]

The news is just thrilling. A heartfelt congratulations to the new owner. I’m proud we helped you add this important artifact to your collection. ?
