MT. CRAWFORD, Va. — Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates conducted a special auction of two important glass collections on March 18, 2017. The 568-lot sale comprised the open salt collection of Paul Harvey of Naples, FL and the Bryan Grapentine collection of cologne bottles from Phoenix, Arizona.
Pressed lacy-period salt resonates with bidders
The renowned Harvey collection included over 400 open salts primarily from the pressed lacy period spanning roughly 1827 to 1845. A new record price for a lacy salt was set when an extremely rare CD-4 Lyre covered salt in opaque soft violet blue with subtle mottling (Lot 37) sold for $35,100.00. The Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. product is one of only seven recorded, including specimens in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Corning Museum of Glass. This very example had set the previous record price when it was acquired by Mr. Harvey from Jeffrey S. Evans on May 19, 2006, lot 1001 for $34,100.00.
Other important salts included a colorless pressed lacy WN-2 Wagon (Lot 272), one of only three recorded examples, that rolled to $8,775.00, and a fine English cameo example probably by Thomas Webb (Lot 8) featuring a flowering tree design and silver rim that reached $1,638.00.
Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. bottles captivate
The well-known Grapentine collection comprised more than 400 nineteenth century cologne bottles and related containers. The main focus of the collection was colorful cut overlay wares from the second half of the nineteenth century made in the United States England, France, and Czechoslovakia. It was no surprise that two Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. tapered, wide-base bottles were the top selling specimens.
The first was deep emerald green to colorless in a paneled diamond and leaf pattern (Lot 442) that sold for $994.50 followed by a deep ruby to colorless Punty and Basal Arch example (Lot 443) that reached $936.00.
Over 500 bidders from ten different countries participated in the auction with roughly 40% of the lots selling to online bidders.
