19th century folk art lion brings $1,622

Attesting to the continued popularity of American folk art, this carved and painted folk art lion brought $1,622 at Litchfield County Auctions‘ July 20, 2011 sale in Litchfield, Conn.

The finely detailed roaring, semi-crouched lion is from the 19th century and measures 17 inches by 25 inches by 13 inches wide.

Condition issues include two old breaks and repairs to the tail, some cracking and flaking of the paint, and a cracked rear leg (but not split through.)
