Fan fans will meet in El Paso

Members of the Fan Association of North America (FANA) will hold their 27th annual assemblage in the desert setting of El Paso, Texas, from Wednesday, April 1 through Sunday, April 5, 2009. The event will be headquartered in the historic and elegant Camino Real Hotel, located in the Golden Horseshoe area of the city.  For four days attendees will enjoy meeting with fellow hand-held fan collectors, visiting museums, viewing fans, sightseeing, and buying and selling fans and fan-related items. After registration on Wednesday, with time to greet old friends and make new ones, the event-filled assemblage begins in earnest.

Thursday morning the group will take a bus tour of nearby Old Mesilla, N.M., a town rich in Mexican and Old West history where time seems to have stood still for more than 100 years. In the afternoon attendees will visit the University of Texas El Paso to view and help identify UTEP’s fan collection.  Then a bus will take everyone shopping at the Saddle Blanket, a one-acre store specializing in items made in the Southwest and Mexico.

The evening concludes with a welcome reception.

On Friday morning, attendees will walk to the nearby El Paso Museum of History to see the fan exhibition that brought them to this special city. In the afternoon, members will attend the much anticipated fan sale, followed by a general meeting. After dinner, members may bring any fans they want identified by date, country of origin, or composition to FANA specialists Ellen Dennis and Betsy Smith.

Saturday morning there will be lectures from 9 a.m. to noon. Betsy Smith will discuss fan repairs; Tracy Winkler’s presentation will be on finding fans; Cynthia Fendel will talk about ephemera, photography and fans; Gary Myron will speak about Swiss canton fans; and Sylvie Gould will have a presentation on rainbow fans. After lunch, members have another opportunity to buy fans at the annual fan auction.
The El Paso Assemblage will culminate with a gala banquet that evening.

The FANA Assemblage is accessible to anyone interested. Saturday lectures are open to the public without charge. Memberships in FANA are available at the door.  For details about assemblage events, hotel rooms or meals, contact: Sandy Lawrence: Fandysan@aol.com or 510-223-5726.
