ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Believe it or not, everyone has paper collectibles in their homes. They keep them for various reasons until they either throw or give them away, or pass them on in the family.
Paper collectibles encompass hundreds of micro-niches in numerous general fields of interest, including postcards, posters, photographs, advertising, matchbooks, records, toys, books, magazines, pamphlets, business cards, pin-ups, calendars and more. Documents of all kinds, such as stocks, bonds, letters, deeds, certificates, vouchers, bills, checks, reports and receipts can have historical significance and also be artistically appealing.
Many people come to the Great Eastern U. S. Antique Advertising, Book and Paper Show at the Allentown, Pa., Fairgrounds to buy that addition to their collection they have been seeking or to find something decorative to make their home happier.
The upcoming event on April 24 and 25 will add Pop Culture to the mix by allowing attendees to bring their own paper items to be verbally appraised by experts including Gary Sohmers, host of “Calling All Collectors” radio show and who appears as an appraiser in Collectibles, Memorabilia, Pop Culture and Toys on the seven-time Emmy-nominated PBS Television program “Antiques Roadshow.”
Attendees will have their own television-like experience with Sohmers, who will be giving his appraisals for charity. Donations will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the fight against breast cancer.
Sohmers will be assisted by other experts, all willing to share information or even to buy your items if you feel that it’s time for you to sell and the price is right.
First editions, children’s books and beautifully illustrated antique volumes are just part of the book selection available at the show. Frameable prints, turn-of-the-century stereoviews, and publications of all kinds such as calendars, sheet music and more fill the booths.
Show hours are Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Agricultural Hall at the Allentown Fairgrounds, located at 17th and Chew Streets.
