BEVERLY, Mass. — Kaminski Auctions’ Thanksgiving Estates Auction, which took place Nov. 28-29, 2009, attracted bidders both locally in Massachusetts and internationally via phone and live online bidding. The auction featured general antiques and fine art alongside a collection of Art Deco furniture and decorative accessories. Consignments hailed from estates spanning Massachusetts to Kaminski’s second location in California. All prices reflect a 15 percent buyer’s premium.
Highlighting the auction was a 19th century Asian carved box. An ornate and intricately carved pattern covers the top and sides of the piece, depicting a series of ferocious dragons in mid-flight. A real discovery, the box was consigned by a local artist who for years used it to store her paintbrushes and art supplies. Its mysterious origin and skillfully hand-carved design intrigued bidders both online and on-site. With a feverish volley of back-and-forth bidding by phone, Internet and floor bidders, the piece skyrocketed beyond its original estimate, ultimately selling to a floor bidder for $26,450.
“To say our consigner was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement," comments Frank Kaminski. “It’s discoveries like these that stir the treasure hunter in all of us.”
