OAKLAND, Calif – Anyone with an interest in the finest American pottery, from Bauer to Russel Wright, Pacific to Roseville, is likely familiar with Naomi Murdach.

For almost 40 years, Murdach has amassed what is likely the world’s largest collection of American made pottery from the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s, which has been featured in his famous or perhaps “infamous” shop in San Francisco. Stocked from floor to ceiling in showcases, the store is a virtual museum with over 15,000 pieces of Bauer alone, not to mention the 300 pieces of Pacific Pottery, countless Roseville, Hall, Red Wing, American Modern and Iroquois pieces. Murdach, in his 80s, is now ready to retire and his collection will be featured at Clars Auctions.

From teapots to dinnerware, over 10,000 lots in all will be offered over the course of their next eight sales. Separated by maker, style and period, Clars kicked-off this amazing series of sales with their July 10-11, 2010, sale. At that sale two Roseville art pottery “Florentine’’ bowls measuing  3 inches by 10 inches by 8 1/2 inches, both having blue “Rv” stamp brought $100. A lot of two Newcomb College art pottery flower bowls with frog in a mottled turquoise to blue glaze having a triangular everted rim, impressed marks on bottom, measuring 2 1/2 inches by 7 inches brought $375.

After 40 years of collecting over 20,000 of the finest pieces of American made pottery, are there any that he just can’t part with? When posed this question, a surprising answer was received. “I’m just going to keep three little very special Bauer Christmas cards that are made out of pottery.”
