GRAY, Maine — Finding an old, self-framed tin advertisement for Grape Nuts – in near mint condition, no less – in the ceiling is not a usual thing. Nevertheless, the ceiling of an old house is just where that advertising collectible, which will be sold in Cyr’s Jan. 30 Collector’s Auction, was found.
The Grape Nuts advertisement, featuring a girl in a red cape and her St. Bernard, is just one of many advertising collectibles in the sale. The selection also includes advertising antiques for soda, cigarettes, tires, automobiles, beer, shaving cream, cigars.
Other highlights will include a unique mid-nineteenth to early twentieth-century oak and tin folding bathtub – complete with its own gas water-heater, alleged to have been used as a prop in the movie Best Little Whorehouse In Texas. There will also be a substantial antique toy and bank selection from a private collection up for sale.
