CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Kathleen Cross Estate has commissioned Wears Auctioneering of Solon, Iowa, to sell what is expected to be one of the largest lamp and lighting auction in recent years. The Crosses had a passion for antique lighting. They attended auctions and shows, and the collection engulfed their home. Box after box has been discovered in preparing for this special lighting auction, the quantity is staggering and the quality is excellent, said auctioneer Brent Wears.
“Having known Stan and Kathy for many years it is indeed a pleasure to have been chosen to sell their collection,” he said, “I don’t think anyone knew just how much there was in the home. We have been surprised by the continuing discovery of more and more items in preparing for the auction.”
“The greatest discovery has been the quality of items. At the first walk through we knew there was a lot, but when we really started working several months ago, we kept finding more and more good quality lamps and shades, literally box after box, some complete and many parts used to complete other lamps found throughout the house.”
This will likely be the largest collection of antique lighting to come to the market in quite some time. The collection includes more than 60 complete prism ring hanging lamps, 50 complete students lamps, 40 complete table lamps, 30 complete various hanging lamps including cast iron library, hall and store, 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-wick new and old stock angle lamps, more than 500 individual lots of shades and 200 lots of lamp restoration parts.
The sale is scheduled for Sept. 23, 2010, at the South Expo Hall, Hawkeye Downs, 4400 6th Street SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A preview will be held Sept. 22. Doors open the day of the auction at 7:30 and box lot parts begin selling at 9 a.m. The inventoried lots start selling at 10 a.m. live and online at Proxibid.com.
