HYANNIS, Mass. – MV Auctions/Auctions of Cape Cod and the Islands will conduct a multi-estate sale Nov. 24, featuring more than 50 original paintings, fine china and decorative accessories, antique rugs and period furniture.
Fine-art lots include a large winter mountain scene by Hobart Nichols Jr. (American, 1869-1962). Nichols was a genre, landscape painter and illustrator who once served as president of the National Academy of Design. He studied at the Art Students League in Washington, D.C., and at the Academie Julian in Paris.
Three landscapes by Charles Gruppe (Canadian-born American artist, 1860-1940) will be up for bid. Also offered will be a large oil painting by the artist’s son, Emile Gruppe (American, 1896-1978), and a large oil painting of a landscape with figures by Anthony Thieme (Dutch-born American artist, 1888-1954).
China and decorative accessories include a selection of Canton china and a set of Mason’s ironstone (including serving pieces) in the Imari 2240 pattern. Pewter objects, a Civil War field surgeon’s kit and several Nantucket baskets will cross the block
Among the lots of American furniture is a Chippendale cross-stretcher Pembroke table with original finish (circa 1770s), a Hepplewhite four-drawer chest and a Duncan Phyfe-style mahogany pedestal table, made around 1820 and heavily carved.
