At the height of the U.K.’s recent political tension, Bonhams announced that “Spitting Image” puppets of former Prime Minister John Major and his wife, Norma, are to go on sale in its entertainment auction June 23.
Estimated at $4,000 to $6,000, these puppets appeared in the British satirical puppet show during the Tory Prime Minister’s final term of office. The puppet is made entirely in shades of gray — including his skin — reflecting the writers’ impression of his dull character. In the program, he was shown enjoying meals of peas in silence with his wife, Norma.
Previous sales of “Spitting Image” puppets include Gordon Brown ($7,000, June 2007), Margaret Thatcher ($7,400, June 2007) and Tony and Cherie Blair ($18,500, January 2008). “These items are a great piece of British television and political memorabilia and the popularity of ‘Spitting Image’ puppets continues — they are much loved by politicians and the public alike,” said Stephanie Connell of Bonhams Entertainment Memorabilia Department.
