Swann Galleries brings choice prints to auction during print week in NY

NEW YORK—In conjunction with the New York Print Fair and Print Week, Swann Galleries will offer a large selection of choice prints in two consecutive early November auctions.

On Nov. 5, Swann will conduct their annual autumn sale of Important Old Master Through Modern Prints. The morning session offers more than 165 Old Master Prints. The afternoon session features 19th-century prints, American prints, and European prints.

On the following Monday, Nov. 9, Swann will offer The James B. Parks Collection of Fine Prints. This single-owner sale of carefully selected Old Master through late 20th-century works was assembled over the last four decades. Mr. Parks, of Santa Monica, Calif., aimed to outline the origins of modern art. He charted the history of modern printmaking and identified key artists, including precursors such as the Tiepolos and Goya; 19th-century radicals Daumier and Manet; and inventive 20th-century masters including Picasso, Duchamp and Warhol, and acquired significant examples of their work.

Nov. 5: Important Old Master through Modern Prints

Old Master highlights from Nov. 5 auction include a complete set of Albrecht Dürer’s Apocalypse, 16 woodcuts, 1496-98 (estimate: $50,000 to $80,000); and a fine selection of Rembrandts including The Strolling Musicians, etching, circa 1635 ($15,000 to $20,000); The Presentation in the Temple: Oblong Print, etching, circa 1640 ($18,000 to $22,000); Cornelius Claesz Anslo, Preacher, etching and drypoint on Japan paper, 1641 ($15,000 to $20,000); and Christ Healing the Sick (The Hundred Guilder Print), etching, engraving and drypoint, circa 1643-49 ($25,000 to $35,000).

Featured 19th-century works are James A.M. Whistler’s Rotherhithe, 1860 ($7,000 to $10,000); a lifetime impression of Camille Pissarro’s Marché de Pontoise, drypoint, 1888, one of only two known impressions in this state, and only the second lifetime impression to come to auction in the last 20 years ($6,000 to $9,000); Odilon Redon’s L’Art Céleste, lithograph, Paris, 1894 ($15,000 to $20,000); Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s Affiche pour Elles, color lithograph, 1896 ($10,000 to $15,000); Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Le Chapeau Épinglé, lithograph, 1898 ($15,000 to $20,000); and several of Paul César Helleu’s portraits of society women, among them La Visage encadré, Madame Helleu, color drypoint, circa 1900 ($7,000 to $10,000).

Among a diverse selection of American prints are three color woodcuts by Gustave Baumann ($7,000 to $10,000 to $12,000 to $18,000); cityscapes, such as John Taylor Arms’s West Forty-Second Street, etching, 1920 ($6,000 to $9,000); Martin Lewis’s Chance Meetiing, drypoint, 1940-41 ($10,000 to $15,000), and Stow Wengenroth’s New York Nocturne, lithograph, 1945 ($6,000 to $9,000); as well as George Bellows’ The Tournament, lithograph ($8,000 to $12,000); and Charles Sheeler’s Architectural Cadence, color screenprint, 1954 ($5,000 to $8,000).

Important German Expressionist works include Emil Nolde’s Hamburg, Kran, etching, aquatint, drypoint and punch work, 1910 ($15,000 to $20,000), and Tänzerinnen, woodcut on Japan paper, 1917 ($20,000 to $30,000); Erich Heckel’s Der Mann (Selbstbildnis), woodcut, 1913 ($15,000 to $20,000); and Käthe Kollwitz’s Die Eltern, woodcut, 1923 ($4,000 to $6,000).

Picasso is represented by etchings from the Vollard Suite, including Femme nue devant une Statue, 1931, and Modèle et Grande Sculpture de Dos, 1933 ($12,000 to $18,000 each); mid-century prints, Petit Nu assis au miroir, lithograph, 1947 ($10,000 to $15,000), and Recordant el Doctor Reventós, engraving, drypoint and roulette on Japan paper, 1951 ($8,000 to $12,000); as well as desirable after prints of his paintings Nature Morte avec Figure, color pochoir, circa 1920, and Interior Rouge avec un Translatlantique Bleu, color aquatint, 1959 ($15,000 to $20,000 each), and Bouteille de Rhum, color collotype and stencil, circa 1965 ($12,000 to $18,000).

The first session of the Old Master through Modern Prints auction will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 5 with Old Master Prints. The afternoon session, comprising 19th- and 20th-century prints, will begin at 2:30 p.m. The illustrated catalog is available for $40 in the U.S. ($50 elsewhere).

Nov. 9: The James B. Parks Collection of Fine Prints

Among the earliest works in the Parks Collection are 11 circa 1750 etchings by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, including Mago con Quattro figure presso un’ara fumante (estimate $4,000 to $6,000); and etchings by his son, Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo including Venezia riceve l’omaggio di Nettuno, circa 1750, only the second impression to come to auction in the last 20 years ($6,000 to $9,000).

A run of works by Francisco José de Goya includes individual prints as well as a collection of 50 (of 80) etchings and aquatints from Los Caprichos ($8,000 to $12,000); a partial set of etchings with aquatint from Los Desastres de la Guerra ($6,000 to $9,000); and a group of six etchings with aquatint and drypoint executed in Bordeaux between 1824 and 1828 ($5,000 to $8,000).

Lithographs by Honoré Daumier include Le Ventre Législatif, 1834 ($7,000 to $10,000), and Rue Transnonain, le 15 Avril 1834, 1834 ($8,000 to $12,000). There are more than 25 prints by Edouard Manet, including Victorine Muerent en Costume d’Espada, etching and aquatint, 1862 ($5,000 to $8,000); Christ aux Anges, etching, 1866-67 ($7,000 to $10,000); Guerre Civile, lithograph, 1871-73 ($15,000 to $20,000); and the portfolio Le Fleuve, with eight etchings with drypoint and aquatint, 1874 ($15,000 to $20,000).

The top 19th-century lot is Edvard Munch’s large lithograph, Separation II, 1896 ($40,000 to $60,000).

The Parks collection is especially strong in early prints by Picasso, including Salome, drypoint, 1905 ($15,000 to $20,000); and cubist compositions Nature morte, Compotier, drypoint, 1909 ($10,000 to $15,000); Le Siège de Jérusalem, bound volume with three etchings with drypoint, one of 15 numbered copies on Japan paper, signed by both Picasso and author Max Jacob, 1914 ($25,000 to $35,000); and L’Homme à la Guitare, engraving on Japan paper, 1915 ($15,000 to $20,000).

Prints by Wassily Kandinsky include the early drypoints Radierung 1916 No. I, and Radierung 1916 No. IV, 1916 ($12,000 to $18,000 and $10,000 to $15,000 respectively); Kleine Welten III, color lithograph, 1922, from the portfolio of the same name ($15,000 to $20,000); and a color lithograph postcard advertising Bauhaus-Ausstellung, 1923 ($4,000 to $6,000).

Other outstanding modern European examples include Paul Klee’s Hoffmanneske Szene, color lithograph, 1921 ($25,000 to $35,000), and Joan Miró’s Personnages, etching, 1935 ($8,000 to $12,000).

Major works by Marcel Duchamp include The Large Glass and Related Works, two volumes, with 18 etchings with aquatint, one of 95 numbered copies, 1967-67 ($8,000 to $12,000), and De ou par Marcel Duchamp ou Rose Selavy (La Boite en Valise), complete with 80 color reproductions and three-dimensional replicas of works by the artist, 1966, edition of 75, signed by Duchamp ($40,000 to $60,000).

The collection also features very scarce early prints by Jackson Pollock, including lithographs from the mid-1930s, and four circa 1944 Untitled drypoints and engravings, printed posthumously in 1967 from plates found in his estate ($3,000 to $5,000 to $7,000 to $10,000).

Parks was unusual in his regard for the artistry of Walt Disney, and there are three Disney items in the auction, including an original production cel of Snow White and Bashful, circa 1937 ($4,000 to $6,000).

The Nov. 9 sale concludes with a couple of classic Andy Warhol images, Liz, offset color lithograph, 1964 ($15,000 to $20,000); and Oyster Stew, color screenprint, 1969 ($10,000 to $15,000).

The auction of The James B. Parks Collection of Fine Prints will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 9. The illustrated catalog is available for $35.
