Swann Galleries sale will feature largest collection of Frank W. Benson prints ever offered at auction

NEW YORK —  On Sept. 23, 2008, Swann Galleries will hold an auction of American Prints, featuring sporting prints by Frank W. Benson, one of America’s foremost Impressionists.  The sale contains 75 prints by Benson, the largest collection of his prints ever offered at a single auction.  All are signed and in pristine condition; some are dedicated by the artist.

Highlights among the Benson prints include:

Old Tom, etching, 1926  (estimate: $8,000 to $12,000)

Marsh Gunner, etching on cream laid paper, 1918 (estimate: $4,000 to $6,000)

Dory Fisherman, etching, 1927 (estimate: $4,000 to $6,000)

There are also many fine etchings of birds by Benson in the sale.

In addition, Swann’s American Prints Sale includes beautiful prints by John Taylor Arms, Martin Lewis, Stow Wengenroth and others.  [Martin Lewis’s Rainy Day, Queens, 1931 (estimate: $15,000 to $20,000) is the highest estimated lot.]

The auction will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008

The prints will be on public exhibition at Swann Galleries Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Monday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday, Sept. 17 and Friday, Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Monday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to noon.
