BEVERLY, Mass. — An example of artist James Barre Turnbull’s sculptural work will be offered for sale at Kaminski Auctions April 7, 2013. The exciting kinetic sculpture will be a highlight of the 20th Century Decorative Art and Design Auction.
James Barre Turnbull is an American artist who lived from 1909-1976. A Missouri native, Turnbull was active with the WPA and later settled in Woodstock, New York. He is best known for his murals and paintings of farm life. The kinetic sculpture carries a presale estimate of $1,000 to $2,000.
The kinetic wire sculpture features an abstract butterfly suspended mid air above a pair of many petaled flowers. The focus of the delicate sculpture, however, is not the figurative subject, but rather the beautifully balanced composition. Thin wires culminating in small leaf like shapes provide a subtle counterweight for the butterfly. The articulated tapering stems do the same for the flowers.
