MT. CRAWFORD, Va. — Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates will host the firm’s first annual auction of textile and antique sewing accoutrements July 16 beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The auction will be held at the firm’s gallery, 2177 Green Valley Lane, Mt. Crawford, Virginia. In addition to in-person bidding, telephone and absentee bids will be accepted, and internet bidding will be facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com.

Consignments include a large group of items deaccessioned by the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) and George Washington’s Mt. Vernon. These items are being sold because they fall outside of each museum’s collecting mission, and all funds will go into the museums’ acquisition funds

The auction will feature a fine selection of early 19th to early 20th century quilts from Virginia, Maryland, and other areas including examples that have descended in the family of the original maker; a collection of Shenandoah Valley of Virginia overshot coverlets that were recently featured in the exhibition “Colorful and Cozy: The Woven Art of the Coverlet” at the Heritage Museum in Dayton, Virginia; other types of coverlets and woven bedcovers; 18th and 19th century samplers and needlework pictures; vintage clothing; a large selection of 19th and 20th century sewing tools, work boxes, sewing machines, and accoutrements; plus related objects.

Two events will be held on Friday, July 15 in conjunction with the auction: a lecture by Brenda Hornsby Heindl on historical Kentucky weavers at 2 p.m. at the auction gallery, and a special tour of the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg, Virginia at 4 p.m. Both are free and open to the public.

The complete auction catalog will be posted around July 7. The sale is on public preview July 13-15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
