

This John Bell covered butter crock sold for $1,700 at the Horst Auction Center of Ephrata, Pa., Jan 22, 2011.
The circa 1850 antique stoneware crock is signed “John Bell / Waynesboro” and measures 8 inches in diameter by 5 inches high. Its lid measures 9-1/4 inches in diameter by 1-3/4 inches high. The piece is salt-glazed with brushed cobalt flowers and ribbed ear handles with cobalt terminals, and the lid is brushed with cobalt flowers.

The condition report states it suffered numerous rim flakes during the last 161 years.
