Auction house’s free appraisal clinics becoming legendary

DELAWARE, Ohio — The hour is approaching and anticipation is high; will this be the day another bronze Buddha with precious gems comes in? Or will someone have found an amazing Rookwood statue at a garage sale over the weekend? Anything is possible, and in past months and years, just such objects often walk in the doors of Garth’s Auctions during its monthly appraisal days, which are open to the public. The Buddha eventually sold for $43,475 (after being unearthed from an Ohio basement and brought in for evaluation) and the Rookwood statue that was bought out of someone’s yard for just $2 sold at auction for $1,763.

At Garth’s Auctioneers & Appraisers in Delaware, Ohio, the staff gathers for their walk-in appraisal days on the last Tuesday of each month from 9:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. While the appraisers treat each client and their objects with the utmost professionalism, it is often difficult for them not to act like kids in the proverbial candy store. During the January appraisal day, a woman who had emigrated from Europe 30-40 years ago walked in with a variety of religious artifacts including three presentation crucifixes, handed down in her family for several generations. Preliminary research on the presentation crucifixes has unearthed examples by the same maker that have sold for as high as $30,000 each.

“These appraisals are really simply quick reviews or evaluations,” explains Garth’s President Amelia Jeffers. “We suggest it as a first step; sometimes, after the verbal appraisal, a client chooses to have an official, documented appraisal for insurance or estate purposes. Sometimes they decide to sell with us.” Garth’s will be pleased to give you a lesson about your object and a complimentary, verbal evaluation of its value. They can also explain just how the auction process could work for you if you are interested in selling the object(s) in question. No appointments are required and it’s open to the public.
