
A May 23 Bonham’s sale featuring more than 200 lots of rare and vintage writing instruments had a historical rarity take center stage. One of Sir Winston Churchill’s fountain pens, of the last of 53 produced, sold for a record $24,400. Churchill famously preferred Montblancs and used them to sign many documents of great importance. This handsome example, fashioned of 18 karat pink gold inlaid with tortoiseshell lacquer bands, with a captop ringed with 53 diamonds, was displayed in the London Imperial War Museum and was accompanied by provenance documents.
