AMANA COLONIES, Iowa – The 2011 annual Amana Marble Meet was held at The Clarion Inn Amana Colonies June 3-4m 2011. The official start of the 34th annual meet was June 3 with the traditional family-style dinner, followed by a short program, all interlaced with the awarding of many door prizes. This year’s program featured Scott McBride giving a talk on the 1947 VFW National Marble Tournament.
Room hopping had been going on day and night since midweek, with the number of open rooms growing daily as collectors and dealers arrived. By the evening of June 1, 25 rooms on the list; by June 2 there were 55 rooms on the list; and June 3, there were close to 70 rooms on the list.
The opening of the show June 4 saw all exhibitors set up and ready to go. About 20 percent of the exhibitor tables were occupied by contemporary marble makers. The remaining tables were filled with antique handmade marbles and vintage machine-made marbles of nearly every type and style. The exhibit room remained crowded all morning.
Many door prizes were also given out during the course of the show.
Marbles and related items covered the exhibit tables, with exhibitors registered from 19 states. Well over 120 visitors came through the show June 4, where they should have been able to find any type of marble or related item they were looking for in one room.
The 35th annual Iowa Marble Meet will be held June 1-2, 2012, at the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Convention Center, 300 East 9th St., Coralville, Iowa (Exit 242 off I-80). A block of rooms has been reserved for meet attendees. To make room reservations, call the Marriott at 319-688-4000. Tell them you are with the Iowa Marble Meet group to get the marble show room rate. The rate will be the same as the 2011 Clarion room rate. The Friday night banquet cost will remain the same in 2012 as it was in 2011.
The annual Iowa Marble Meet is one of the most consistently popular marble gatherings in the country, due in part to the hard work and dedication of Gary and Judy Huxford.
