Manuel Mafra Palissy ware urn

A rare, monumental and excellent quality Manuel Mafra Palissy ware urn and cover, circa 1875, measuring 26 inches high by 16 inches wide. The baluster shaped brown glazed body decorated through with large lizards, moths and insects with a yellow glazed vine branching up and across the body, terminating in green leaves and purple grapes, with two very large coiled snake handles and the tall collar decorated with tendrils and frogs, all below a domed brown gazed lid surmounting by a large coiling snake fighting a large green lizard. One of four or five other known examples of monumental Manuel Mafra pieces and was probably manufactured for exhibition purposes. Sold at auction for $3,998.
