DELAWARE, Ohio – Garth’s Eclectic Auction on Oct. 2 will feature a large selection of 20th century furniture, artwork and accessories in addition to Garth’s usual assortment of quality Victorian and country antique furniture and decorative accessories. It will be a virtual “one-stop shop through the ages” for collectors and dealers alike.

Buyers in the market for period-style furnishings will be impressed with the selection of high-end pieces. Among the offerings are a Drexel bowfront chest, an Emmett Barnhart Chippendale-style cherry desk, a pine Queen Anne-style high chest, a Boston Store mahogany server, a Drexel bedroom set, an R-way breakfront, a Willett cherry bedroom set, French style dining room sets, and a Widdicomb French style bedroom suite.

For buyers looking for more rustic home decorations, an Adirondack-style living room set comprised of a sofa, armchairs, footstools, end tables, a coffee table and a wastebasket, estimated conservatively at $400-$600, would provide an instant room transformation. However, if the simpler lines of the Arts and Crafts movement are more your collecting style, there are several pieces from which to choose including a hall tree, an umbrella stand and a trestle table. For stylish Art Deco furnishings, collectors will be drawn to a very unique wrought iron demilune hall stand with a marble shelf, fabric insert light shade, and an oval mirror. Estimated at $200-$400, it might be just the thing for your design taste.

In addition to the furniture, bidders will be tempted by a wide array of silver, firearms, lamps. porcelain and china including a collection of occupational shaving mugs, a large collection of Ohio pottery, dolls and toys including Steiff riding bear with growler, as well as artwork including several paintings by noted local artist Emerson Burkhart (Ohio, 1905-1969).

Born near Kalida, Ohio, in 1905, Burkhart attended Ohio Wesleyan University, studied at the Art Student's League in New York and was a student of Charles Hawthorne. In 1931 he returned to Ohio, where he taught at the Ohio School of Art. He also helped found the Ohio Art League, painted several murals for the WPA and after the death of his wife in 1955 he traveled as Artist in Residence for the American International School, spending much of his time in Europe and Mexico. Eventually he returned to Columbus, Ohio, until his death in 1969.

Burkhart has been described as one of Ohio's leading 20th century artists. He was primarily an American Scene painter, painting in both Impressionist and Post-Impressionist styles to capture the essence of his subjects and the realism of his surroundings. Many of his paintings documented the lives of African-Americans in Columbus, Ohio, and have been compared to works by Ivan Le Lorraine Albright. In the Aug. 7 Eclectic Auction, Garth’s sold two of Burkhart’s works; a large oil on canvas of a fisherman on a rocky coastline brought $1,351 and a smaller seascape of boats nearing a harbor realized $1,058.

In the October Eclectic auction, a 1968 oil on canvas fall landscape painted “near Shadewell, Ohio,” will be sold with an estimate of $600-$1,000. A larger 1969 oil on canvas of a people outside of several log cabins, titled Canadian Indian Family, estimated at $800-$1,000, and a 1960 Impressionist scene of a fisherman working on a dinghy with a harbor in the background, estimated at $800-$1,000, are each likely to exceed expectations given recent increased interest in Burkhart’s work.

An auction preview will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 28 through Sept. 30; 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Oct. 1; and 8 a.m.-10 a.m. Oct. 2.
