PHILADELPHIA – Gerald R. (Jerry) Birl captured first prize in the Casino Chips and Gaming Tokens category at the American Numismatic Association’s 2012 World’s Fair of Money. The annual convention of the ANA was held in Philadelphia Aug. 7-11, 2012.
His award-winning exhibit, “A Selection of Gaming Chips Featuring Roulette Wheel Designs,” was comprised of 135 chips from all across the United States (as well as several foreign countries) and other roulette-related items.
This was the fifth time that Birl has won first prize for an exhibit of casino chips or tokens at the ANA annual gathering. Earlier this year, Birl won the People’s Choice Award at the Casino Chip & Gaming Token Collectors Club 20th Annual Convention, which was held in June at the South Point Casino in Las Vegas, which was also the fifth time he had won the top prize at the chip collectors’ convention for an exhibit.
“This was a good year for my exhibits, I won both of the top awards – the double header – at the ANA and the chip collectors’ convention,” Birl said. “Both exhibits were unique and different and appealed to both the general public at the chip convention and met the high standards used in the formal judging at the ANA.” He continued, “I am pleased that both of my exhibits were well received. I truly enjoy sharing my collections with other collectors and guests at the conventions.”
Birl has been an active member of the CC>CC for more than 20 years and in the ANA for 11 years. He stated that he’s planning on continuing to be an active exhibitor and hopes to win more awards in the coming years. He noted, “I hope that my exhibits will help introduce people to the chip collecting hobby, which has been a wonderful and fulfilling part of my life. I have had many memorable experiences and made lots of friends during the past 20 years. It has been great fun.”
