BRIMFIELD, Mass. — J & J Promotions Antique & Collectible Shows is a Brimfield legend. With good reason, too, considering the owners, Jill Reid Lukesh and Judith Reid Mathieu, are the daughters of the late Gordon Reid, considered by many to be the pioneer of outdoor antique shows.
“We have maintained the standard and quality of merchandise set forth by our dad, the late Gordon Reid – the granddaddy of outdoor antiques shows in the U.S., since 1959,” said Judy Mathieu, co-owner.
Heading into this show season, J & J are preparing to welcome 300 to 400 exhibitors, including many they’ve hosted for the past several years.
“The many reputable exhibitors at the J & J show offer authentic antiques and old collectibles, and many return year after year to exhibit during our show,” Mathieu said.
Jill and Judith, along with their mother, Madelyn, picked up the mantle of show promotion following their father’s death in 1974, and they haven’t looked back since. Their show has been featured on numerous television shows, and in local and national publications for more than 50 years. Plus, their show has attracted such notable guests as the research team from the Smithsonian Institute, Harry Rinker, Terry and the late Ralph Kovel, Judith Miller, as well as a television crew from England’s BBC.
Having grown up in the antiques show scene, J & J have logged a lot of show memories over the years, but one that often comes to mind is the wedding of 2006, Mathieu explained.
“At 5:30 a.m., just prior to the opening of our show that year, hundreds of buyers were at the gate as a couple wed on our property,” she said. “The crowd cheered and offered the couple ‘best wishes,’ and as soon as the gate opened, everyone, including the newly married couple, joined in the shopping spree.”
With all those years of experience under their belts, and an excitement for the show that never tires, J & J offers these gems of advice for first-time Brimfield attendees:
- Dress for comfort
- Take notice of where you park your vehicle
- Pick a time and a place to meet, so in case you get separated from your party you have a designated place and time to reconnect.
J & J’s 2013 schedule includes May 17-18, July 12-13, and Sept. 6-7. Show hours are Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Admission is $5; on-site parking is $8. For more J & J Show information, contact 413-245-3436 or 978-597-8155.
