Kyle on Antiques

Q I have what I believe to be an 1850s covered wagon odometer. I saw one on the Antiques Road Show, show number AIT-359, several years ago. Mine is in excellent condition, believed to be in the original shipping crate, and works. I found this fine piece in an antique store about four years ago. The store I bought it in did not know what it was. My husband’s keen eye and my wanting to have it got this piece for a bargain – if it is indeed, the real thing. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

A You have an interesting artifact, however, I’m afraid I haven’t been able to turn up any specific information on this “wagon odometer.” I suppose there might have been a need to count the mileage that an early wagon traveled, but I haven’t run across a piece like this. Do any of our readers recognize this piece and have more background on their use and current collector value?
