Welcome to Antique Trader’s comics buyer’s news. You have been redirected from Comics Buyer’s Guide’s website, www.cbgxtra.com, which has been “unplugged.”
From 1971 until its discontinuation with the March 2013 edition, Comics Buyer’s Guide (CBG) magazine put comics fans in touch with their hobby. CBG was where the world went to talk comics.
Comics Buyer’s Guide ceased publication with the March 2013 edition of the magazine. “Ceasing publication of a magazine is never an easy decision, but there are several forces that have worked against CBG’s sustainability,” said F+W Media president David Blansfield.
“With vast amounts of freely available comics information online, declining paid circulation and advertising, and the costs and constraints of print, continuing to publish a monthly, small-circulation title like CBG has become financially and operationally unsustainable.”
Here, in Antique Trader’s Comic Book & Graphic Novels news category, you will find comic book market updates, news on original comic art, and comics trade news. Features include comics-related articles written by market leaders such as Barry Sandoval and David Tosh, both of Heritage Auctions, Maggie Thompson, and Brent Frankenhoff, to name but a few.
Although Krause Publications, a division of F+W, a Content and eCommerce Company, is no longer publishing a magazine solely on comic book collecting, the long-time enthusiast brand is still serving the comics community by occasionally publishing comic book guides that everyone from newbie enthusiasts to established collectors will find of value.
One new title recently published to serve comic book fans is the “Picker’s Pocket Guide – Comic Books” by David Tosh. Tosh has been a comic book fan since the early 1960s, and a serious collector since 1972. For several years he owned and operated a small collectibles shop, Mr. Nostalgia, in Batesville, Arkansas. Tosh is currently a senior cataloger, pop culture specialist, and consignment director with Heritage Auctions’ Comics and Comic Art department. He has been with Heritage since 2003.
Tosh says in the introduction, “In the past ten years, certain vintage American comic books have soared in value, with several different comic books trading hands for over a million dollars.”
He goes on to say, “With hit movies based on classic comic book characters filling theaters all over the country, attention to this once humble, throw-away form of entertainment has risen every year.”
“Picker’s Pocket Guide – Comic Books” not only includes some of the most valuable comic books to hunt down, but also where to find hidden treasures. It also includes common reprints and facsimiles, so you can avoid being burned. The entire Picker’s Pocket Guide series is available at major book retailers and online at KrauseBooks.com.
Digital back issues of Comics Buyer’s Guide, as well as many other resources for comic book collectors, are still available on KrauseBooks.com.
