Antique Radio Club holds Radiofest July 30-Aug. 1

WILLOWBROOK, Ill.— The Antique Radio Club of Illinois (ARCI) will be holding its annual Radiofest on July 30-Aug. 1, 2009, at the Willowbrook Holiday Inn Convention Center in Willowbrook, Ill. Radiofest is one of the largest gatherings of radio collectors in the USA. Collectors from across the country, Canada, Europe and Australia gather annually for this event. The Willowbrook location along the I-55 corridor is no more than 30 minutes from downtown Chicago, and Midway and O’Hare airports.

Radiofest opens with a large radio auction on Thursday evening. Top-of-the-line radios, rare advertising, vintage television and phonograph items are the featured fare. The thrill of a live auction creates a high energy opening to Radiofest. The public is welcome to sell their radios at the auction for a nominal charge.  Last year the auction lasted over three hours.

Friday morning starts bright and early with the radio flea market. More than 200 selling spaces are filled with radios, phonographs, televisions, parts for restorations and, for many, nostalgic memories of the past. Also on Friday, ARCI is open for free “Radio Appraisals." The public can bring in actual radios or pictures of their radio. Radio experts will advise them of condition, the age of the radio, suggestions for restoration and an approximate value.

Radiofest also offers informational seminars to club members (annual dues are only $20). This year’s presentations will include a history of WLS Radio in Chicago, a history of early radio broadcasting cards, the annual Ham Radio Forum,  and an afternoon workshop on basic radio repair.  Details about the seminars can be found on ARCI’s Web site

Friday also brings fantastic displays of rare and unusual radios and other items in our annual Equipment Contest.  This temporary museum features rare examples of radios and related memorabilia typically not seen by the public.

This year ARCI is also proud to present Chuck Schaden with our first Lifetime Achievement Award at the Awards Banquet on Friday evening.  Chuck, a long time supporter of ARCI, has been in radio broadcasting for more than 39 years and was the host of Those Were the Radio Days and When Radio Was. He was also a founding board member and major donor to the Museum of Broadcast Communications.  Chuck recently retired from broadcasting and the club is proud to present him with this award for his contributions to radio. Tickets are available at Radiofest until Friday noon.

Radiofest concludes Saturday morning. The flea market continues until noon.  They also host a large donation auction where the proceeds support the club.  Radios and related items are sold at the auction without reserve, often as low as $5.  This final event brings out the bargain hunters!

Radiofest is the premier event that everyone should attend.  Additional details can be found on the ARCI Web site at or by calling the club at 630-739-1060.
