Rocky Mountain Antique Map Fair on Sept. 19-20

DENVER – On Sept.-20, 2008, the Rocky Mountain Map Society will host the Eighth Annual Rocky Mountain Antique Map Fair at the Denver Central Library, located at 13th Ave and Broadway. On Friday the Fair is open to the public from 5 p.m.-8 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. There is a $5 admission fee.

Antique maps combine art, history, and mystery joined wonderfully together. See thousands of maps from the 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries for sale. Some are very rare. All have stories to tell. Prices range from $10 to over $30,000. See history graphically. Find where your family originated. Indulge your travel fantasies. See California as an island. Collect a piece of history.

The Rocky Mountain Antique Map Fair has an international appeal with a local flavor. We strive for diversity among our dealers, and we plan to have a wide variety of cartographic treasures available. More than 15 dealers from the United States and Europe are expected at this year’s Fair. Complimentary expert opinions will be offered to help assess the value of maps brought by the public to the fair.

A unique 32-inch diameter OmniGlobe®, will be on display. The OmniGlobe®, invented and manufactured by ARC Science of Loveland, Colo., is the first true 360-degree spherical 1080p full-motion digital screen display. Combining high performance digital projectors with ARC’s proprietary optics, the system is surprisingly simple and visually enthralling. It can display digital images as varied as dynamic global weather patterns, seismic activity, a planet, or even digitized antique maps. (

In conjunction with the Map Fair, Tom Overton will present a free lecture, “The Changing Face of Colorado: County Boundaries from Statehood to the 20th Century” at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 in the Gates Room of the Denver Central Library. Using original maps, he will address the development of the counties in Colorado. The seventeen original counties have been re-defined, re-named, and sub-divided into the present 64. Original maps will be available for viewing.

The Map Fair is hosted in partnership with the Denver Public Library, home to an outstanding collection of Western maps, and the Rocky Mountain Map Society. Visit the Society’s Web site at for a list of dealers, photographs of past map fairs and more information about this year’s Map Fair.
