Real estate and contents of early plantation to be sold at auction

RICHMOND, Va. – One of Virginia’s important surviving early 19th-century plantation complexes and its impressive three floors and outbuildings of furniture, decorative arts, farm equipment will be sold to the highest bidders at an on-site sale on Sunday, April 19, 2009. The sale will be conducted by Motley’s Auction & Realty Group of Richmond.

Paxton is a circa 1820 rural homestead, located in southeastern Powhatan County. This historic Federal-style brick home with English basement is nestled on about 10 acres and is a Registered Historic Landmark.

The main dwelling, a brick home with Federal details, has been little altered since it was built. The mansion’s original Federal-style exterior detailing remains largely intact, with only the shutters missing. The windows have architrave casings with mid-19th-century six-over-six-light sashes.

Outbuildings include a brick smokehouse; two small frame slave quarters; a restored brick-and-frame icehouse; and fenced pasture land and a four-stall barn that dates to the late 19th century. Both the main dwelling and the outbuildings have retained much of their integrity.

The house contains three levels packed top to bottom with furniture and items for daily living that date from the early 1800s to the present. Included in the sale will be canopy beds, rugs, furniture and a large collection of cast iron planters, garden statuary and fountains. A fully restored horse-drawn surry and doctor’s buggy, a mill wheel, stone trough, early pegged-constructed manger, other farm equipment and tools will be offered.

Darrell Olgers, Vice-President of Motley’s Auction & Realty Group’s Antique and Estate Division said, “It is not often that buyers get the chance to take home items from a historic homestead such as this.” He added, “Given the current economic times prices should be quite reasonable for potential bidders. This should be a fun and exciting way to spend a Sunday afternoon.”
