The Marrakech Express highlights sale

LOS ANGELES – Butterfields will offer the one-of-a-kind ‘Tented Room’ designed by Tony Duquette and Hutton Wilkinson in its fall 20th century arts sale

Assembled for a prestigious California home in the late 1990s, the Tented Room is a Duquette/Wilkinson masterpiece.  Designed to evoke a surreal experience for each visitor, the pair created an environment of fantasy and whimsy through an ingenious use of rich draped fabrics, strategically placed furnishings, mirrors and lighting, which were used to generate optical illusions throughout the space.  Upon entering the Tented Room, each visitor was transported, enchanted and inspired by India, Morocco and Southeast Asia, all while enjoying the California coast.  (More information on tented rooms here.)

As one of the foremost Duquette experts in the field, Stein developed and produced the auction of the Estate of late design legend Tony Duquette in 2001, serving as Specialist-in-Charge of the sale.  At the time, the auction was touted as the largest house sale to ever take place at a major auctioneer in North America.

The Tented Room will be displayed ensuite, enabling the public to enjoy and experience the space as Duquette and Wilkinson intended. For the preview, which is complimentary and open to the public, the Tented Room will be re-created using similar dimensions and lighting.

Additional items include a monumental signed and numbered black walnut trestle table with book matched top inlaid with holly snow geese detail by Arthur (Tripp) Espenet Carpenter III (estimate $15,000-$20,000); a Daum Nancy enameled cameo glass vase with rose and butterfly decoration (estimate $18,000-$25,000); studio glass work by William Morris titled Three Stones (estimate $15,000-$20,000); a pair of Alvar Aalto bent birch Tank armchairs for Artek, 1940s (estimate $5,000-$8,000); a three piece Macchia Seaform by Dale Chihuly (estimate $15,000-$18,000) and a Midnight Sky glazed earthenware bowl, circa 1966, by Gertrud and Otto Natzler (estimate $2,000-$4,000).
