WINDSOR, Conn. — More than 350 lots of American antiques; Pilgrim century to Federal Period and fine art including a George Sotter oil and a watercolor by Paul Signac will kick off an important event at Nadeau’s on Oct. 30.  Among the fine art rarities include a Nathan Hale bronze by Bela Pratt and a Daniel Webster bronze by Thomas Ball of Boston. There are more than 75 lots of fine art included in the auction.

Other Americana items include a large collection of redware and stoneware; a large collection of sterling silver including Tiffany including important Tiffany bronze triple inkwell; an 1816 needlework by Henrietta Wood, Pennsylvania; five tall clocks; woodenware; toleware; Chinese export; American Indian pottery and baskets; and Oriental rugs and carpets.

An important collection of Pilgrim century furniture will be offered from the estate collection of Mrs. Henry (Delphina) Clark, previously from “Hastings Hill” Suffield, Conn. Clark was a careful and dedicated collector of Pilgrim antiques, and the items offered in the auction will show the excellent quality of her selections. Known as Delphina, Clark was a noted author on the early history of Suffield, and past Honorary Vice President of the Society. She was a member of the Colonial Dames, and Trustee of the Suffield Historical Society

Clark was active in the restoration and finishing of the Hatheway House in Suffield, the Buttolph Williams House in Wethersfield, the Hempsted House in New London and was a member of many conservation societies. She was also the donor of a large parcel of property to the Hartford Audubon Society (Hastings Hill, Suffield, Conn.). These items have been in family possession since her death. Many were acquired from Lillian Blankley Cogan in Farmington, Conn., and were used in Clark’s restored 1737 home in Suffield, on Hastings Hill Road. This home has been the object of many features in national magazines and books such as Historical Works of Wallace Nutting and Richard Pratt.

On Jan. 25, 1964, many of the same antiques offered in the auction are seen in The Hartford Times “For and About the Home”, page 28.

Upon Clark’s death in 1984, a major portion of her furniture collection in this 8-room, 18th century house, was donated to the Connecticut Antiquarian and Landmarks Society, and today can be seen in the houses she helped to restore,  particularly The Burbank-Phelps-Hatheway-Fuller House in Suffield, Conn.  Other top furniture lots include a William & Mary gate leg drop leaf table; Queen Anne blanket chests; tulip paint decorated blanket chest; Queen Anne chairs; Federal chairs, cupboards and tavern tables and tea tables.

Top lots of decorative accessories and silver include a rare Tiffany Studios Turtleback tile and bronze triple inkwell and a large collection of redware and stoneware; duck decoys; American Indian basketry and pottery; books; miniature watercolors; fine needlework by Henrietta Wood, 1816; three sterling silver tea sets; six sterling silver flatware sets including two by Tiffany; approximately 30 Oriental rugs and more.

Items are being sold for estates and institutions, including for the benefit of the War Office Lebanon Green, Conn., SAR and the Windsor Historical Society. Items will also be offered from several estates in West Hartford; Colchester; New Marlboro, Mass.; New Paltz; and New York. The estate of Kate Phelps, West Hartford, Conn., who was a collector of American antiques from the 1950s to 1970s, will offer many items with original receipts from prominent Connecticut and New York dealers.
