Single-owner auction offered at Susanin’s

An enormous single-owner auction from the estate of Merritt Buckley, Crown Point, Ind., will take place at Susanin’s on July 12 at 10 a.m. The preview for the auction begins July 7 through auction day, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. About 1,000 lots will be offered without reserve.

Buckley began collecting at a very early age. Paralyzed at the age of 3 with polio, Buckley would never walk again but that did not stop him from collecting. It started with stamps and coins and from there he amassed a house full of collections including glass, porcelain, silver, jewelry, stickpins, buttons, toys, marbles, military, guns, swords, knives, ephemera, postcards, valentines, fishing lures, arrowheads and many other objects of interest. His only living sister, Mabel Robertson of Florida and Indiana, says he collected to overcome his disability.  “Merrit loved flowers and people and people loved Merritt.”  Everything he collected came from Lake County, Ind., from auctions, markets, dealers and friends.

Trained as a draftsman after high school, Merritt worked a short while for the Atomic Energy Commission in Richland, Wash. He passed  away at age 87; he has asked that his collections be sold at auction, with proceeds going to the Crown Point Community Foundation and The Shriner’s Hospital, Chicago, Ill.
