30 gallon double leaf stoneware crock brings $5,000 at Red Wing Collectors Society Convention

A 30 gallon salt glaze crock with two leaves brought the highest bid at this year’s Red Wing Collectors Society auction in July. Although unsigned, its perfect condition drove the bidding to $5,000. The 35th Annual RWCS Convention July 6-9, 2011 brought more than 1,500 visitors to the city of Red Wing to buy, sell and learn more about the lines of Red Wing stoneware, art pottery and dinnerware. Other items of interest in this year’s auction included a 2 gallon Ice Water cooler selling for $2,600 and a 12 gallon salt glaze leaf crock bringing $1,900.

Memorabilia belonging to 1930s vocal jazz harmonists The Boswell Sisters crossing the block

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, the three Boswell sisters, Martha, Connee, and Helvetia (aka "Vet") became headliners with famous jazz bands of the 1930s. They were acclaimed throughout the United States and overseas. They recorded with Victor, Okeh, Brunswick, and Decca Records. An auction Aug. 4 will feature items from the Boswells’ clothing and jewelry to broadsides, posters, glossy photos, and original records. The sale also includes furniture and paintings, several of which were painted and signed by Connee Boswell herself.

Masudaya Target Japanese tin robot captures $23,600, nearly doubling high estimate

At Morphy’s April 29-30, 2011 auction of antique toys and advertising, bidding was especially competitive for two robots from the famed Masudaya "Gang of Five" series. The top robot lot was a Masudaya Target Robot. This purple tin "Gangster" stands 15 inches tall and comes equipped with a dart-shooting toy gun, and darts. The example was in excellent condition, complete with its gun, darts and beautifully lithographed original box. Against an estimate of $8,000-$12,000, it hit the bull’s eye at $23,600. The strength of the high-end baseball card and memorabilia market dazzled collectors at Robert Edward’s record-setting May 7, 2011 auction. An astounding 179 lots sold for $10,000 or more. The stunning prices on all 19th and early 20th century baseball cards and memorabilia precisely totaled a staggering $9.5 million across 1743 lots. The average lot sold for $5,472. A Lou Gehrig jersey and a Lou Gehrig bat sold for $329,000 and $176,250 respectively – both records for these items.
