NEW YORK — On March 27-28 Guernsey’s will take collectors back in time for the chance to own some of the historic treasures from the archives of Urban Archaeology (UA). The auction will feature approximately 1,000 architectural artifacts discovered by UA over the decades.
The auction will begin at 1 p.m. EST both days at Urban Archaeology. In addition to live
bidding, phone bids will be accepted and Internet bidding will be facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com.
For more than 40 years, Urban Archaeology has been at the vanguard of saving historic architectural elements from destruction. It has been the organization of choice for architects, designers, corporate buyers and home owners. Many have visited the firm’s building in the heart of NYC’s landmarked Franklin Street where the display of treasured items resembles more a museum than a showroom. With additional offices in Bridgehampton, Boston and Chicago, Urban Archaeology has been the go-to source for everything from monumental outdoor statuary and extraordinary wrought-iron estate gates to remarkable, often unique creations of every description in assorted metals, stone, ceramics, glass and wood.
Works by revered artists including Edgar Brandt, Samuel Yellin and Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann will be included in the auction. Objects from prominent institutions including The Plaza and St. Regis Hotels and the Yale University Library will be featured, along with items from such settings as Paris’ Place de la Concorde and iconic Le Bon Marché. From original statuesque Mermaid and Merman figures from the Place de la Concorde’s fountain to the awe-inspiring Baptistery Gates from Fifth Avenue’s famed St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a number of iconic pieces will be available to bidders.
The public will have an opportunity to preview the items set for auction Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, March 24-26, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
A collectors’ catalog showcasing the items in the auction in detailed photographs and descriptions, is available for $22 if picked up in person, or $32 if shipped within the U.S.
