CHEYENNE, Wyo. – No movie cowboy played by the immortal John Wayne was ever accused of being “all hat, no cattle.” Whether playing an irrepressible cattle baron in McLintock or portraying such unforgettable characters as True Grit’s Rooster Cogburn and The Alamo hero Davy Crockett, Wayne always delivered onscreen credibility.

Eight screen-worn items from Wayne’s film career, including his silver-banded hat worn in the 1948 Academy Award-nominated film Red River, highlight the New Frontier Auctions event at the Cheyenne Firearms & Western Collectibles Show, Saturday, August 27.

John Wayne Red River hat

John Wayne's cowboy hat from 'Red River' rides into auction in August.

The American Film Institute named Red River, which also starred Montgomery Clift, the fifth-greatest Western of all time, but the hat took on a life of its own. Entertainment Magazine called it “one of the most iconic hats in film history.” Pre-sale estimates: $10,000-$30,000.

The sale also includes items Wayne wore in The Alamo: a buckskin jacket and a coonskin cap. For additional information, go to or call 913-406-8057.
