Civil War presentation sword commands $2,300
During a June 21 online estate auction presented by Everything But the House (EBTH), a Civil War presentation sword attracted much attention and rose to $2,300 before the gavel fell.

Engraved and Etched Presentation Sword Draws Interest
Fifty six bids were placed by people vying to take home the Ames foot officer's sword. The sword features a gold-plated brass model 1850 hilt with sharkskin grip wrapped in braided brass wire and a patterned partial sword-knot attached to the guard. The finely cast pommel cap has been engraved with the initials “Lt J. M. Barr.” The blade has been etched with Ames scrolling patriotic motifs and a panel that reads, “Ames Mfg. Co., Chicopee, Mass”. The ricasso bears the inspector marks of “GGS” (George G. Saunders), and is dated “1862”.
This sword is accompanied by the original Ames scabbard, featuring gilt mounts. An engraving on the top scabbard mount reads “Presented to Lient (Lieutenant) James M. Barr by the Citizens of Delphos. O.- (Delphos, Ohio) July 19th 1862”. Included with the sword is a custom-made display case, constructed of beech hardwood with a UV-protected glass window. The case is fitted with a gold-tone lock and comes with keys.
The Camp Dennison Guards (Ohio) were an independent infantry company that had established a recruitment office in Delphos. It is believed that James M. Barr served as a lieutenant (c. 1862-63) in the Dennison Guards Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
"I never thought while digging through estate jewelry we would come across this sword," said Lucy Ball, project manager at EBTH. "Even though I don't have much experience with antique arms, I could tell right away this was the real deal! I still can't believe that I got to hold it in my very own hands."
Service and Silver Among Highlights
Also attracting bidder interest was a Daniel Spooner coffee and tea service, circa 1810. The service realized $953. A coffee pot and teapot with Griffins on their lids, a cream pitcher and covered sugar bowl with a Griffin lid, and one open bowl were included. All of the pieces have handles and stand on four ornate feet topped by swans. Only the largest coffee pot is marked “Daniel Spooner 1810”.
Not to be outdone, an antique sterling silver "Wellington" flatware collection by Wm. B. Durgin commanded $934. Comprising of seventy-three sterling silver flatware pieces, the total approximate weight of the collection is 62.240 ozt. All of the pieces bore a simple "B" monogram and "Sterling" marking.
Jewelry Offers Captivate
In addition, those fascinated by jewelry were treated to selections including:
• 14K gold plated jade pendant necklace, measuring 18-inches long, with a drop, carved and rectangular green jade stone. In addition nice carved stones, in various colors, were attached to the chain. The piece sold for $615.
• 10K yellow gold class ring made by the Balfour Company in 1931. It is accompanied by its original box, marked "L.G. Balfour Company" and "Thomas B. Barr." It realized $394.
