Original sidewheeler toy boat may cruise to $35K

DENVER, Pa. — Morphy Auctions is presenting a Toy, Doll, Marble, and Figural Cast Iron sale June 24-26, 2016. The bidding starts promptly at 9 a.m. each day.
This auction begins with more than 350 antique vehicles from the collection of Jack Herbert, who contributed regularly to Antique Toy World for four decades and is an internationally recognized and respected expert known for his encyclopedic knowledge of toy ships, cars, airplanes, trains, omnibuses, and other wheeled playthings.
Two highlights in this category, both from manufacturer Francis, Field & Francis, include an antique omnibus, with stenciled roof and elaborate coachman’s seat, pulled by two white horses, measuring 15-1/4 inches long, with an estimate of $15,000 to $35,000. The second lot is an 1850-1860-era original sidewheeler boat, featuring an oversized sailor image, smoke stacks, walking beam and detailed railing, multi-colored hull and an American flag at the stern. It is expected to realize between $15,000 and $25,000.
The Herbert collection also features a selection of European-made vehicles, including: a large French hand-painted tin limousine ($5,000-$10,000), an early 20th century Marklin 1st Series Battleship “Connecticut” ($12,000-$18,000) and a late 19th century French hand-painted clockwork train ($10,000-$20,000).
Antique dolls and plush dolls highlight the second day of this event, with 125 lots of vintage Steiff German collectibles on offer.
Among the featured lots is a museum quality, all original set of 1905-1906 Steiff velvet skittles made for the European market. Each of the nine different animals in this assortment retains its tiny blank button and is in practically unplayed-with condition ($8,000-$15,000).
French Jumeau doll, with an estimate of $3,000 to $5,000.
Dolls from makers including Kestner, Simon and Halbig, Heubach, Käthe Kruse and Kammer & Reinhardt are also slated to sell, with a cabinet-sized Jumeau doll with even bisque, large blue paperweight eyes, finely painted facial features and sound provenance is expected to realize $3,000 to $5,000.
Also featured in this auction are selections of fine marbles, cast iron items and collectible banks.
Of the 160 lots of glass, china and sulphide marbles featured, one of the highlights is a 33/64-inch glass marble featuring a solid green base with a lutz metallic luster ($2,000-$3,000).
From the world of mechanical, still and vending banks, nearly 300 examples are represented in this sale, including a J&E Stevens Calamity mechanical bank, featuring two football players tackling a third and activated when a coin is deposited. This bank has an estimate of $15,000 to $25,000.
Rounding out the sale are character toys, space and robot playthings and lunch boxes, along with pressed steel, cast iron and tin items.
