Sliding in between Halloween candy and Christmas cookies, Thanksgiving is a time for savory food to take the spotlight. Yes, pie is an essential part of the festivities, but turkey, stuffing, and side dishes like green beans are the true stars of the meal. Still, for many, it’s just not a holiday without a few sweets, which is why you can find antique candy containers in all kinds of shapes, including turkeys.

The most desirable candy containers are made of pressed paper, papier-mâché, or composition. They are usually unmarked, but most were made in Germany between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of World War II. This includes containers shaped like turkeys, despite their being an all-American bird and Thanksgiving being an American holiday.

Turkey candy containers aren’t as common as, say, Halloween figures, Santas, or Easter bunnies, which makes them more sought after. Most of them look like live turkeys; usually males displaying their majestic tail feathers, but you can find a few hens, too. And some take the forms of surprisingly realistic-looking roast turkeys, which are even rarer. Imagine one of those as the centerpiece on a Thanksgiving table!
